Today
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:56:44 AM »
I hope we take some time to remember one of the most profound attacks we took. I looked at the Herald and not one mention on the front page. (If it was at all I may have missed it) We need to remember the day John Lennon was shot though...

I thought about the day I noticed bullet holes still in some of the barracks at Schofield, I stood at the top of Kole Kole Pass looking at the ocean over the Naval Ammo Dump. That was "no mans land" between Schofield and the back gate I use to drive through to get to Wai'anae Beach. I have been on Hickam Field and stood on the edge of the Arizona Memorial and looked down the gun turret almost completely underwater. I thought about today, many times... I hope you did to.

My hat is off to those who are still alive and the memory will and should not be relegated to an afterthought or last page.

There is a lot of mention on other papers pages about Pearl Harbor. In fact the governor of West Virginia ordered the flags to be lowered to half-mast today.

Not sure why CNHI would not do a story about this.

Perhaps you missed the lengthy story and photo that started at the top of the front page monday, marking the round, milestone 69th anniversary.

Meanwhile, i didn't see any Lennon coverage at all in the herald. How quickly we forget.

John Lennon was shot on December 8th. I'm sure that will get mentioned in the news tomorrow in several places.

I think Pearl Harbor is a bigger news story by some magnitude though.

No argument with that.

While lennon and his music were famous and are missed, no one can say that his death changed world history or, for that matter, really affected anyone directly other than emotionally. Whereas Pearl Harbor changed the course of world history and all our lives.

Still... I would expect to see a number of articles about Lennon in tomorrow paper. Now if the Herald runs a feature on Lennon tomorrow I'm betting they'll get a letter from a few people. Actually I'm betting some letters are already in the mail.

What date is TODAY???? So an article yesterday and zip on the anniversary???? Maybe Christmas, July 4,New Years... lets either write about that before or.... maybe after???? Sounds like "Christmas in July"My point was and still is.... 7 DEC...not 6 DEC or 8 DEC is the date... Do you change your Birthday to suit you? I bet Social Security would like to see that.

Personally I think this fixation with Lennon is a non issue. One nut killing another... Hmmmm (My Opinion)... I place more importance on Pearl but also names like Altaie or Bergdahl...they may still be ALIVE. All this just shows me where our hearts and minds are at. Our History/Event Dates are being revised or ignored and we don't seem to give a damn. Oh well.

I think it is a generational thing.  I was never a Lennon fan, and wasn't particularly grievous when he was murdered, but I WAS a big Beatle fan as a kid.

However, I was born way after Pearl Harbor; I learned the date only because the adults were always talking about it when I was a kid.  I remeber JFK's, RFK's and MLK's assasinations much more clearly and particularly JFK, I notice the date every year. Who remembers dates of the Civil War except Civil War buffs and historians?  WWI? Not so much.

Now, 9/11 will be a biggie for many generations to come, because we have not yet solved that greater conflict.

And of course, whenever there is a decade or quarter century rememberance, it is a big deal. JFK's death is coming up on 50th in a few years. Any one see the Secret Service special? It was really good.

Speaking of the JFK Assassination... isn't there a lock up of all the info on the murder for 50 years following the death?? and if so... soon to be released ...2013???

Well everyone knows what the Gettysburg Address was and even in school I had to memorize it. We knew the main dates.. even up to WWI and "Amistice Day". There are dates that should be remembered... not so much the smaller ones but those that stand out. It gives us reference. Like 1492, 1776, 1812, 1861 1941, 1963 etc. We even memorized the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere right along with the preamble to the Constitution and the amendments. I don't know if they still do that.

If we are allowed to FORGET.... we will.

Actually, the Secret Service/JFK's men special was quite interesting and the first time since the event that these men had been together and talked about it. They had been told NOT to talk about it at the time.  The amount of time and stress they endured during and after the event was amazing. I think it was History Channel. You would probably enjoy it, LT.

I managed to see part of it...The one man was the one who climbed over the back of the car and pushed Mr's Kennedy back into her seat. Was interesting.

We even memorized the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.
Just as an aside, he and the Raiders are alive and well and playing Branson regularly in addition to occasional tours, playing their historic hits.

Exactly. You've obviously been there, too.

I saw them a 2nd time in cleveland a few months ago. For those from the sharon area who might recognize the name, Darren Dowler, formerly of The Letterman, is the new vocalist, aka Baby Raider.
