It's really amazing what is really edible and what we are capable of digesting. Somewhere along the evolutionary line we learned how to farm and cook. I suspect we then only grew our favorite things cutting out what we could eat in favor or what we liked to eat.

The ethic varieties are pretty amazing and a lot of it depends on what foods were available to them at the time. Look at how entrenched corn products have been in western society (corn being native to south america) or how entrenched rice is to eastern cultures.

I will occasionally eat hot dogs even though I know how they are made. I love asian food except Korean food. I'll try pretty much anything. If I like it I'll eat it again. If not, well on to the next thing that's tagged as food.

I have a book on eating in the wild. There's a lot stuff that grows around here that we could subsist on. would take a bunch of time gathering it - - - but then, if it ever came down to it - well . . . that's what ya'd do!

My Korean Daughter In Law has stated more than once that there is a certain Oriental Society that would eat anything with legs, short of a table and anything with wings, short of an airplane... so...there is even some lines different oriental societies won't cross LOL.

On occassion, I have opened the fridge at her home only to see a mess of things moving around, waiting for the pot. ....oh...and they were yummy.

....reminds me of the old joke from decades back in the post-commune MOTHER EARTH NEWS heyday, involving the elderly wavy-gray-haired mackenaw-shirted Euell Gibbons which was a take off on his now-for-most long-forgotten "You ever eat....?" Grape Nuts TV commercial of the day-

...."Ever eat a picnic table?

....Many parts ar-r-r-e ed-i-ble.".....

....h-m-mm-m-m...........................

....if you lived over by the Park.....

....one could be set for awhile....

Mother Earth News... usually found close to the Whole Earth catalog which was like Amazon in paper form. Back to the food thing, there's an amazing amount of stuff that can be shoved into our face to sustain us. I honestly hope we as a civilization don't have to revert  to being hunter gatherers. That would result in some massive bloodshed. I want to make an attempt at a garden this year, however I think the insect and wildlife population is going to out compete me.

NP, you'd be surprised how effective a nice outdoor cat or two can be in deterring the critters.  I have a couple boys that love to sleep in the garden cause they can hide under the cover of the plants and snag the little buggers that come scurrying though.

Outdoor cats and coyotes usually make for just coyotes though. There used to be large number of "outdoor" cats around a few years ago. Then the coyotes showed up. I don't thing a cat would screw with a raccoon or an opossum either. We have tons of coon in my area. We had the sheeeeet scared out of us one night when two coons got in a major disagreement right outside of our bedroom window at 3:00 am.

Insects are the biggest issue. We don't have much of a rodent population around mainly because of the very large snake population in our area.

Euell Gibbons!!  Haven't heard that name in a very long time! He was supposed to come to IUP and talk to the Bio Club back in the 70s but then he went and died. Really wanted to meet him, too.

NP, I'll take winter over a large snake population anytime. Hate Snakes.

Mother Earth News - still read it from the library.
I also will take snow over snakes and insects.  My Girl Scout troop went to Georgia years ago - and we planned on camping.  Guess what - you can not camp in the south.  The insects, lizards and critters will get you.  Noticed that all of the crypts were above ground also.  We stayed in a nice motel and enjoyed the pool.
While driving home tonight I had a white-out condition briefly.  Happened very sudden - on route 102 and I was glad to pull into my driveway.

Well... I won't kill a nonvenomous snake. I have however partaken in a few cottonmouth fatalities in our subdivision. Snakes no matter how how much don't like them perform a necessary function. ;) Camping in the south? It can be done. anywhere you go there are considerations when camping.

Mainly in this thread it should be the availability of Chinese take out.   That or does PF Changs make dehydrated Lemon chicken for campers.  ::)

Now that's my idea of camping.... luxury hotel with a wake-up breakfast room service. :)
