Another Conneaut Lake Restaurant closes down
« on: April 07, 2011, 06:41:51 PM »
Another sad day for Conneaut Lake.  Kentucky Fried Chicken closed its doors at the end of business last night.  There was no mention of it in today's Tribune, so reasons are unknown.  Banks are refusing to give
restaurant loans now, and it is heartbreaking when you drive into the
town of Conneaut Lake from either east heading west, or vice versa,
there are empty buildings on both ends.

Was this one of Art's or did someone else own it?

I truly don't know.  All I heard is that there are going to be several more
closing down--but that is not a piece of info. that has been
confirmed.  I hate to assume anything, except that I got a call today
about all of this, and I would hate to repeat the number that I was given.

....on the one hand, pretty much old news there....

....on the other hand, serving up the same decades old fat-fried artery-clogging menu at not-so-competitive prices in this era of rapidly evolving highly diverse and need-to-be-appealing-fast-food-taste-pallets, not to over look health-conscious, speaks volumes....

....I can't remember the last time I was in a KFC and I eat out everyday!  I think I went in one years back, but only because in was one of those KFC/Taco Bell co-located places when they first started appearing....I remember quickly changing my mind and getting the tacos to go as the overpowering aromatic coloring of the chicken friers left me in a culinary PTSD frame of mind
:-\ ....

.....hate to hear of folks having to close their business, especially in trying economic times, but it is business, you adapt to stay competitive to make sales or you pay the consequences....

KFC revolked the franchise rights for 10 KFCs that Morgan Foods owned, including the one in CL. The reason was that the franchisee did not remodel the restaurants as required by the parent company.

Thank you for answering thequestion on the number being shut down. The number I heard was almost ten times the amount being shut down
which means many jobs being cut, right before tourism season starts.
I can't imagine that the boaters on C.L. will be too happy.

The fast food industry has been under fire for quite a while now. The transformation has come rather slowly for some. McDonalds has been trying to revamp their menu to make things more nutritionally acceptable as have other places. The problem is (for me) is that at many of the places everything tastes the same. I will avoid eating at most fast food places except for five guys. But those fresh ingredients come at a price too. We rarely eat out and I'd rather get dinner at five guys twice rather than McDonalds three times. Plus when I eat big name fast food chains I experience a mild form of nausea after I'm done eating. I can't say why but it must have been something I ingested. Unfortunately with the kids these places are not entirely avoidable.

So anyhow, it's nice to know the reason why the KFC is going out. I just hope something will step in to take it's place. Conneaut Lake is not exactly a big market but it would be nice if something came in to fill the void. There are some good options out there but there has to be a good attraction and it has to match the communities taste too.

KFC = instant comfort food.  A bit of trivia... the only KFC that has all hearing impaired employees except for the manager is in Cairo. You point to what you want to order. Works very well, too.

I've been in a few Chinese places where you point to order too, but not because the employees are hearing impaired.

….sort of sounding  like ‘the boaters on Conneaut lake’ as well as the other areas were none too impressed either with the Colonel’s lack of comforting, ergo the company’s decision to not invest in remodeling the stores as contractually required, due to lagging sales, and relegating them to the heap of fast food history….

....just a hunch- the 10 stores being shuttered are not located in urban hip-hop-ish hoods....

….on a parallel note, I read last month that SUBWAY is now the number one fast food franchise in the world, overtaking McD’s by a 1,000 stores….

...and McD's, in additional to the menu changes Night notes, above is making a huge store remolding effort/investment all across the country to attract the newer developing demographic in a neighborhood-gather-spot environment, and based on Tig's travels they are succeeding wildly....

Gore, do you know how long Subway has been in business, I am just curious.  They almost located out in Conneaut Lake, but I am not sure
what changed.  Everyone I know really loves their sandwiches, and you
are correct about what I call the fast food restaurant "grease factor".
Conneaut Lake is in dire need of a steak and rib house, with just a few
other options available.  Small menu until I can afford to get the empty
Foulk's Bakery building next door if permits can get granted.

I find Subway almost as bad as McDonalds. It may be healthier, but their cold cuts are awful. I can go next door to the Publix grocery store and get a much better (and bigger) sandwich for $1.50 more.

....I do SUBWAY several times a month- they have a couple of selections that I like, and they of course do them exactly the way I really like them as I relax and peruse the daily paper, and I'm a sucker for their macadamia cookies....

....when Tig is out and about on the slab, we're doing McD's more and more with their easy access free wifi and salad selection- a notable consumer change spawned by corporate redirection....

....the local mile-high chain grocery delis do have sandwiches, but they are not competitive with SUBWAY in terms of garnishments/toasting/dining area- when I'm in town- I do enjoy relaxing and reading the paper at the GIANT EAGLE deli, and of course always nice to see Tig's world traveling-buddy, Mr. Kennedy
;D ....

....now, BLIMPIES on the other hand, which in every other sense is no doubt a fine fast food sandwich chain, I make an effort to avoid as personally no matter what I purchase/consume there- it's definitely a flatus tooting-fest for the rest of the day :o ....

Art Cocolin's KFC in Meadville was so much better than the one in CL. Art's was way less greasey. Very big difference.
