Hey, everybody. It's a school field trip

sunday's herald reports that 3 local school boards sent 15 school board members and administrators at the national school boards assn. conference last weekend in san francisco.

This included 6 of the 9 board members and the superintendent from Farrell, 7 from mercer and one from grove city. At least mercer had an excuse: It took that many people to present "Successful Strategies for Engendering and Maintaining Community Support for a Major School Building Project" (Tip No. 1: Don't let the community find out that after you convince them to spend millions on renovations that you'll spend another 10 or 20 grand bragging about the project).

Farrell's superintendent had a great defense: The money came out of THIS year's budget, not the unfinished NEXT year's budget that'll have a huge hole in it from about a 10% cut in state funding. That's like saying, "yeah, the plant is closing in january, but we'll pay for a fabulous christmas out of THIS year's bank account." Hint: If you don't spend it this year, it's a fund balance toward next year's red ink.

staff and board training and development is laudable, but why did most of the other 10 or so local districts not see the need to send anyone, while two districts felt obligated to send TWO THIRDS of their boards? And in a year when it conference is on the west coast in one of the country's most expensive cities to visit.

And here we were lead to believe that the greedy teachers unions are the reason some districts are spending so much money.

School Administration is a symptom of the syndrome.
