The official election 2012 thread

Oh shoot, I'll just start one now.

I might as well be controversial about it too. Not saying he's my pick  but I think Gary Johnson (no relation to Gabby, Samuel, Van, Olson any Johnson in Rock Ridge) Is going to cause a small stir, mainly since he balanced his states budget which is no small feat these days.

That would be an interesting combination on a single ticket. The money parties seem to be in a state of general disarray at the moment. If they don't get it together soon they may lose some of their base to the L's and independents.

Well it's time... No the results aren't in yet. Romney is officially in the lead with Paul nipping closely at his heels and  Santorum pulling strong from the rear.  Perry is unchanged with Gingrich and Backman falling behind. Cain scratched. It's going to be an interesting finish in round one of the "run for the rose garden" (sic)

I see Romney as the likely winner here, but will not be surprised at all if Paul pulls it out. Actually I'll be tickled pink if he does but I'm not hedging any bets on it (or anything else)

I might as well be controversial about it too. Not saying he's my pick  but I think Gary Johnson (no relation to Gabby, Samuel, Van, Olson any Johnson in Rock Ridge) Is going to cause a small stir, mainly since he balanced his states budget which is no small feat these days.

FoxNews the other day had an anchor who announced that he was pulling out of the GOP presidential race and going independent. She went to a guest expert by saying "this has to change the whole election dynamic, doesn't it?"

My reaction: Who is Gary Johnson? He was previously elected to something? He was previously running for president?

The Fox guest had about the same reaction. No, he emphasized, this changes nothing. He's views don't even reflect those of his state's current electorate, and no independent candidate in modern presidential politics other than Ross Perot has even made a dent in the results, let alone one.

Meanwhile, the nonstop horse-race coverage of iowa is driving me nuts. All the statewide caucuses will involve among the same number of TOTAL voters that it takes to win a congressional election in western pa. Who ever decided that this mis-sampling of the american population gets to set the tone for the national election process?

And, geez, the hourly polls that show a different way-out-ahead winner with each new tally. Gimme a break. It's like settling the issue of global warming by sampling Your Local Weather on the 8s. Obviously there is no clear decent candidate if the frontrunner changes by the week, with one person being up or down 20 points from last week.

It's a marathon, not a sprint, and all the coverage is about as shallow as that of the kardashians.

Last night's caucus was statistically a dead heat. It does appear that the field will be whittled down quickly.  The big question is who get the spoils from the others.

I do know that Santorum will NOT get my vote, even if he is the Party's choice of Fair Haired Child. I learned his crap many years ago... not Veteran Frendly and he has a problem with his residency and his childrens schools, while touting local public schools. There is more but if he tries to hide things contrary to his visible "convictions" and not a friend to Veterans..I do NOT want him as Commander In Chief. IMHO

Im running into a lot of supporters of Santorum in these parts.  I guess his issue is having enough funds to continue running.  With enough support he should be able to come up with some cash.  It seems he is gaining some support too.  The apparent frontrunners are so unappealing the more and more they talk that maybe the guys who have been running toward the back of the pack are getting more thought and consideration from people?

Romney has problems with the GOP because he's not conservative enough. The fact that he is also a Mormon puts s lot of people off.

Paul has problems because he's too "fringe" for most. They keep calling his foreign policy isolationist even though is the forefathers non-interventionist stance.  He also has problems with the GOP because of his libertarian value system.

Santorum is a good fit for the GOP hardliners. I personally don't like the evangelical stuff come election time but it works for the new GOP. The whole thing with their stillborn baby creeps a lot of people out though.

The GOP ain't what is was 30 years ago, but then neither are things on the other side of the house.

I'm thinking Romney's support in white-bread Iowa may have been distorted lower because of  outright religious bigotry by some voters.

One woman was quoted on the news last night saying she could never support him because he just ain't a christian (he's a mormon). I find it hard to believe in this day and age that this is the prevailing opinion and that people would still vote against a church-going man who believes i Jesus because he doesn't believe in their flavor of worship. (didn't that end when Wilson appointed a jew to the supreme court and JFK was elected president as a catholic?)

Well there's people that didn't vote for Obama just because he is black and some people that voted for him just because he is. That kind of thinking is alive and well in 2012 like it or not.
