Meadville Country Club
« on: June 03, 2011, 12:40:21 PM »
So for those of you that don't know it... It's my understanding that Allegheny is in the negotiation phase for acquiring the Country Club. It's an interesting move, especially given the transformation the place will have to undergo.

I'll say. But I have heard that both MCC and IBC can be utilized without joining, due to the decline in membership. AC could have their own golf course and also start a culinary school....

Actually what they would get is decent indoor banquet facilities and their own golf course. They also get a business to run which could work for or agains them. Eveything there would be open to the public I'm sure except then they are hosting college related events. It's going to be a paradigm shift for them if it goes through.

And what would owning a Country Club have to do with providing a quality education?

Having worked at Allegheny for six years I have an observation.  There is very little in the way of space for entertaining.  When they wanted to have staff or faculty gatherings they would have the annual one at the President's house/garden.  It was very nice, but there is little space on campus that does the entertaining at the level they could achieve at the country club.  I am not saying that I agree on the necessity of acquiring such a space, just observing that there is not much on campus for that purpose.

So the high dollar donors expect a better entertainment return on their dollar . . .

. . . very educating indeed . . . .

Remember - it is a PRIVATE college.  Not state funded.

Mmm-hmm. I know. Do you think the education is better at a private college as opposed to a state college? I mean - with the ability to entertain the donors more 'effectively' with the purchase of the Country Club (or perhaps offer culinary classes within the liberal arts palette of education as Ami alluded to) and therefore bring more money into the coffers - will the educational quality of the college improve?

Does more $ = better education?

I think it's essentially an accommodations move. I think the Alumni (w/checkbooks) would rather sit down in a decent setting as opposed to the dining hall in Brooks Hall or where ever. Better facilities, etc. It's still a pretty big leap for them to get into this arena.

Maybe they wont use it as a golf course.  That's a nice chunck of land.

Nah, it'll be public and for the school golf team. There's more land than just the golf course too. I think they have about 60 or 70 acres that have never been touched on top of what has been already groomed.

Traditionally, a good liberal arts education is private, and I think that is still true today, maybe even more so.  I can understand how AC needs more 'entertaining space'.... in the spring summer they have consistently used the Big White Tent model. I think it is a good purchase for them. Providing bus shuttle service will be cheaper than buying up the 'hood.

...more power to them; it can only be a big plus for both them, Meadville, and the surrounding area....

I think their plan was to buy everything up to Allegheny St. between Park and North Main. I think they're done there. They've got most of the other side of North Main too.  There are many more schools that get a lot more from their alumni, but Allegheny does pretty good I think.
