If someone went to Allegheny and graduated with a 3.0 and someone went to Slippery Rock and graduated with a 3.5 but the person from Allegheny was hired because the HR rep was an Allegheny alumnus with a preference for other Allegheny alumni - I'd say that was probably not fair . . . but no-one ever said life was.

All we have is opportunity. Time and circumstances can limit it somewhat - but we're a clever species and can often find ways to create opportunity for ourselves.

I just feel kinda bad that the 'Higher Education' system has become the money machine it's become. To start off in your adult life about $150K (more or less depending on where you go to school) in the hole makes one an indentured servant doesn't it? With the Gub'ment now controlling and issuing all student loans - they have essentially become the Company Store.

Granted this thread is about the Country Club . . . but it's symptomatic of a larger problem.

Anybody that would compare Slippery Rock to Allegheny knows nothing about either.

Enlighten me!

I mean - they both offer a 4 year degree. (Which is what I was alluding to.) Which begs the question - if a 4 year degree from Harvard is worht more than a 4 year degree from Mount Union . . . why would they still be the 'same' degree?

I mean - a school's reputation makes the degree more valuable . . . even though it's the same type degree? Essentially a BA isn't a BA if the schools are of a different caliber? What if an employer in CA knew nothing of Slippery Rock and Allegheny . . . all things being equal otherwise, would the employer get a better employee with the Allegheny grad? Are they indeed a higher caliber individual by virtue of their Alma Mater?

Is what you're alluding to is a type of Caste system then?

For one thing, it is harder to get into Allegheny, which means the students tend to be smarter.  I would wager that the courses are tougher at Allegheny.  That means the degree is worth more.

There's a lot of kids that scored well enough on their SAT's to get into Allegheny but could not either afford nor get financing to go because of their parents economic status.  Another question to ask is would you hire someone that graduated from Allegheny with a 2.1 GPA or someone that graduated from the slimy pebble with a 3.85? Probably few (or no one) here has taken classes at both of the schools being compared.  Your education gets you what you give to it. The "who are your brethren that share the same alma mater" matter possible comes into place when you're in the job market.

Allegheny set their short term goals and met them. If the acquisition goes through they'll be able to entertain the alumni at a nicer place the Brooks Hall (or on one of the lawns nearby)

Richer.  There are really smart kids in any given school.  They tend to have more money more than anything else.

Well - in the classic American lockjaw lexicon (think Thurston Howell III) - "Richer IS smarter." Looking about at the hustory of our educational system - that sentiment is quite apperent.

The reality is that an MS from Harvard is better than an MS from just about any other school.
If you argue that if they arn't equal , then they should not both be called MS is not valid. After all  Yaris and Lexus are both Toyotas. Yet they differ quite a bit in both quality and price.
I found this list for educational ranking that would explain some of the reasons for the differences.

Whats missing, and maybe the most important reason according to my old man, is your " Future Network".
There is a high probability that who you know from Harvard would be more usefull network partners than say those from Faber

You are correct.  In reality, parents who are "rich" typically have the resources and time to focus on education, and often, because of their background, they value education and instill that in their children.

Life is not fair. I am sure there are many gifted children growing up in poor families, who will never get the opportunity to realize their potential.  If this disturbs you, perhaps you would consider paying for their college education.

For me, I helped my kids with homework, read to them every night, took them to the museum and the zoo, had family meals every night where we talked about all sorts of things.  It doesn't take a lot of money to do those things, but it pays off.

That does not change the fact that a degree from Allegheny is worth more than a degree from Slippery Rock.  Deal with it.

Every family vacation we took had historical value also. We went to see the Alamo, and every friggin fort or battlefield on the east coast... haha. My dad insisted we see it all first hand.

Huge family joke-story about "Jackson's Flank March"... we were out following little signs on dirt roads, and just about everywhere a bullet grazed a tree they had a plaque... my dad wanted to read them all. We were bored to tears... then we hit a pot hole in the dirt road or something, and the gas tank fell out of our car. The bolts holding it "up" in the car (don't ask me... I'm no mechanic...) broke, so somehow we made it to a little town, and a man named "Lumpkin" helped my dad fix the car. He was the only one who would stay open to fix it for my dad.

Shortly afterwards, like the next morning, my dad traded the car and bought a brand new one. I remember that because his credit was so good, all he had to do was make a phone call to Meadville, and got the loan approved. Back then that was a big deal because we were out of state at the time, and so we also got a lesson on keeping our credit good. LOL

We also got some lessons on Italian swear words....

Funny times.
