The ereader war escalates

(1/2) > >>

NightmarePatrol:
Yesterday the new Google/iriver ereader went on sale at Target. Aesthetically it resembles a kindle and like the kindle it look better in bright light. It also means you need a book light for bed time or lowlight reading. I have been on the fence about an ereader for myself. I bought my wife a kindle a couple years ago for Christmas. It's in her hands daily and she has nothing but glowing, warm fuzzy things to say about it.

How good is the google entry? I haven't seen any reviews on it yet. The device is made by iriver  which is not a new player to the handleld game.   Google has some catch up to play, but they also put themselves out in front of everyone by  using the google books format. I have some concerns about it but I won't get into the technical details yet. I'll wait for the reviews to come out and for a few people to dissect theirs (logically speaking),

Just thought I'd mention this in case anyone is considering an ereader.

CindyLouWho:
Thanks.  My daughter is contemplating which one to get.  Ill pass it on.

Puffin:
Cindy, we have the Sony Reader, and an Amazon Kindle. The Kindle is better right now. Their book prices are better, they have more books selections, it's wireless, and you can access the Amazon shopping network from the reader.
I like the Sony screen though. easy on the eyes.I think they are about the same price too.

Amidala:
I want a color Nook. I read a lot of magazines. Someday. Almost got a Samsung tablet but decided against it.

NightmarePatrol:
Well the first think I think you need to look at is eye strain. The eye strain will be far less on an e-ink device than it will on a backlit lcd screen if you read more during the daytime or try and read outdoors. If you read more in dark places like in bed an LCD based solution may be a better choice. Just don't think you're going to sit in the hack yard and read with an LCD based unit.  I have looked at several the the eink is more to my liking. At least with the current technology.

Then there's the wi-fi only versus wi-fi + 3G. With the wi-fi only you have to be near a wi-fi access pint to do anything where  as with the 3G you can can get a book or a newspaper while cruising down the road at 60mph (with someone else driving of course)

There's a lot to consider, The nook will run you at least $80 more than a kindle FWIW. The ereader market has a lot of options. If I wound up deciding on a color LCD option I'd probably up the ante and get a tablet. This of course is it's all justifiable. I don't get toys to have them and everything needs to have a purpose for me.

Have fun looking though.

Check them all out, there's a lot to choose from.
