The war rages on

Okay, it's a somewhat misleading title, but appropriate if you read this article about Amazon. I will freely admit that we are Amazon consumers especially at Christmas time. Our money goes a lot farther there than it does in a traditional store. What I didn't know is that Amazon is fighting battles on a LOT of fronts. It's long article and talks about the new kindle fire a lot, but I found it interesting.

Jayhawk:
The reason companies like Amazon and Apple flourish has less to do with microsoft- or walmart-like cutthroat actions and more to do with mastering the knack of delivering products and services that are outstanding in design, simply work and, particularly in the case of amazon, that come with a noteworthy price and distribution system.

the variety of stuff amazon can have at my front door within 48 hrs is amazing. Apple's integrated design and software for everything from computers to tablets to music just plain works and without requiring an IT degree or jumping through hoops.

The new kindle is the first real challenger to the ipad, but at the same time it's not going to replace it any time soon because it's still quite the stripped-down version of features, comparable with its low price.

I feel sorry that sales at stores like Best Buy are being eroded by Amazon (best buy never picked up the business of Circuit City has it had expected to when that chain closed; walmart and amazon took most of that traffic). At the same time, when a store like best buy has trained sales people and products you can touch, they must be doing something wrong if they can be outsold by the ability to shop for high-end goods by text description along online.

NightmarePatrol:
Best Buy may have trained sales people, but the ones I have talked to must have been trained in something else because they didn't know squat about what I was asking them.

Amazon has branched out to so much more  than just its bookstore roots. They are now the undisputed 800 pound gorilla of the online purchasing world. What amazes me is how much less I can get just about anything dropped of at my door from them. I suppose they are making tons of money by the high volume model. Yes, we're fond of them at the moment around here. Though a lot of large corporations probably hate them... a lot.
