The silly season - 2011 edition
« on: November 26, 2011, 10:05:24 AM »
Well yesteray officially kicked off the silly seaon with lots of displays of humanity across the country involving evertything from fights to pepper spray and even a shooting or two.  I had to go out to get a birthday present for a party my daughter is attending today. Fortunately the Hobby Lobby was busy, but not overrun with nimrods. I ended up spotting something for our daughter and going back for it.

Today is our weekly staples run to Target. I hope the masses have gone home.

If it were isolated - that'd be one thing. It seems there's all kinds of stupid associated with so called 'Black Friday' and it's widespread. Our character as a collective nation is on display.

My thoughts on this Black Friday... KRAP...

We "enjoy" seeing out citizens acting like stampeded cattle. We love seeing people getting trampled... to death!! We enoy seeing people shoot each other with Bullets, Mace and even trample small children to what?? ?? Buy!!! BUY!!! BUY!!!! Our Elected officials TRY to brag about our people, our country and what in hell do you think all the other countries think of us when they see this KRAP on their TVs. No wonder we have no respect and become the laughing stock of the World.

The stores lower prices just durinTHIS time of year?? so they can b in the black..al at once?? Maybe they should have sales this low..throughout the year to make their quota instead of causing situations that cause physical harm and even death. We are sick... in my opinion.

We BITCH we have NO money but... restaurants are full, stores are full, stadiums are full and homes filled with the Sports packages on the cable, Bars are full and we spend $4-$5 a pack on smokes...and again.. no one can determine the levels of needs and wants and the priorities involved. By all means ..spoil yourself.... if you can. But to increase credit card debt...for what? So we cry the 99% crap, and then the 9% and higher unemployment, no jobs and high debt... and we do this. A shame.

About 1/4 of kids in HS drop out... percentages vary within racial groups. We have failure and yet we revel in this crap at the malls and stores. God Help Us All.

I only did black friday once a long time ago. Sadly enough I'm just not together enough to have my Chriistmas list (albeit short) together a month early. On the bright side they did say the US consumer debt has dropped ten percent in the pas couple of years. On the blea side there's no end in sight to the economic woes. At yet Christmas is hre again. The majority of our Christmas shopping will occur on Amazon where out money goes substantially farther. We also won't get gassed, poked, prodded, shoved or shot by the sliver of idiot masses.

When did the term "competitive shopping" get coined anyhow? That makes it sound like a sport.

Offering up this site... close to hitting the nail on the head. Consumer debt is also predicated on the amount of Bankruptcy that was filed as well as the paydowns. I find it hard that this kind of KRAP will not INCREASE consumer debt and another round of ...yup.... bankruptcy. It is a cycle.. like that car some of us bought and financed with Cash For Clunkers... Love it.. take a paid off car that still works and go into debt , yet again for a new one...this while we barely afford everyday bills to begin with.

Me...personally, I want the Stores responsible for this as well as the stupid shoppers. I don't need a flat screen TV if it means harm to people or even worse...a member of my family and friends. Folks...this is NOT the Christmas Season I grew up with. It has been so conflagrated that it may not even be able to be put out. We have gone from a warm evening at home with family to an inferno bumping and fighting with strangers over a $2 wafflemaker... does ANYONE see something WRONG with this??

Mind you, I am not a Religious person but.... we have taken Christmas and made it what it wasn't meant to be. We have become willing to allow this to happen and actually laugh about it. Where are we at... Gifts are good, but to be injured or harmed in anyway in this quest is not.

By the way, I never did Black Friday and still managed to do my shopping and with bargains. If you need this kind of hostle contact, join an MMA organization.

Folks are disassociated from one another these days. There's no attachment to anything of real worth, so folks attach to the material and temporary. It's a generational issue and has been caused in large part by the societal systems we've created. I don't know so much that folks have been 'willing' to let it happen, because I truly think most folks are ignorant as to why it happened. (Or that anything 'happened' in the first place. Our society seems to be increasingly contaxtless in that way.)

It'll GET corrected, either by recognition of and action to fix the problem, or by catastrophe.

Sadly - I'm thinkin' it's gonna be the latter.

Unless of course the Nanny State comes in and enacts more laws to protect us from our sadly ignorant selves . . . right?

Maybe it's because it doesn't seem like it's the christmas season yet, i found myself being particularly sensitive to the barrage of Black Friday ads and news coverage this year.

I think it's also that a dozen or so merchants i've done business with in the past -- places like buy.com, staples, kmart -- have just plained dumped on my inbox for the past 2 or 3 weeks with near-daily mailings from each one.

It's like wandering through stalls at a bazaar and having every merchant shouting out that you must buy his wonderful merchandise. Only in this case, i made no deliberate trip into a bazaar; they're coming at me in the privacy of my home begging for business.

there's just something insulting to my intelligence that that all these print, tv and online advertisers effectively are ordering us consumers to run out and buy crap, assuming that we will feel compelled to spend money just because they say we should -- i don't really need that, but, boy, at that price i'm going to get up at 2 a.m. and buy two!

Silly season indeed.

I went out to get a present for a birthday party my daughter attended yesterday. I did see one thing in the aisle I grabbed for her fr Christmas.to raise my hand That's the first time I've been out since 1980-something. Some stors opened on Thanksgiving day, others at the 00:00 dark hundred on Friday. I hope they paid theor people accordingly at least.

Technically I do have to raise my hand because I was out, but not for the same reason as the other nitwits.

I'm going to partially blame it on TV shows like "Jackass" and "Springer", "Repo" and "American Hoggers" and the host of human reality trash shows that are aired. All that is popular is shows with people acting like uncivilized angry barbarians. Ye reap what ye sow.

I can promise you I will never as long as I live do the Black Friday thing.  On Thanksgiving, I watched 2 of my sisters-in-law plan their stategy as they flung the newspaper fliers back and forth.  I was cordially invited with them knowing full well that I would say no thanks.  It's a joke if you ask me.

I'm gonna guess nope. And at what point would min. wage time and a half effectively compensate for giving up any holiday that is supposed to be a day of rest and family time?

If they keep pushing back the shopping date, why not the week before Thanksgiving when everyone is already out getting their groceries? On the other hand, they could get a real early start and do it the day after the fourth of July. I'm with CLW...

I would argue that strengthening familes is not a corporate nor a government priority in our present society.
