The flaming Shenango
« on: December 23, 2011, 12:34:28 PM »
Is anyone else skeptical of the idea of spending $150,000 (including $30,000 in tax money) to put thirty $5,000 metal fire pits in the river downtown to make this a tourist destination?

they would be filled periodically during the summer months with burning "aromatic wood" while "soothing music" plays, drawing tourists like moths to stand along walls 20 feet above the water line and... well, stare at the flames. (Then, presumably, while in town they would shop nearby for a prom dress or a tattoo.)

the story in the paper the other day also didn't say where the other $120,000 would come from nor who was behind this project.

All i'm thinking is that Cleveland's Flats entertainment district grew only after they got the Cayuhoga to stop catching fire.

From the way that's painted it sounds like someone was burning a non-wood substance when they came up with that idea. Unless there's something really special about it I don't see it going anywhere. But I usually see burn pits as a blight rather a renewal project.

I'm thinking that submersion lighting in the river may be better than burning wood. Either way you're going to disturb the environment.

You mean "prom dress AND a tattoo" don't you?

Then they can head on over to the Wendy's in Hermitage and put in an application, since I think a tattoo-preferably on the neck- is a prerequisite for a job there. :D   Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Doesn't sound any worse than Meadville spending a shitload of money to renovate an alleyway very near a few downtown bars that was an incredibly popular alleyway for relieving oneself after closing time. I mean - it's a much better place to whizz now. Maybe they could make the Shanango more urination friendly!

Never quite got the reasoning on some Tattoo locations.. Face, neck or even the tramp stamp. Two of these do create a problem when trying to seek employment.. While it is the right of these Brainiacs to HAVE a facial or neck Tat..it is also the RIGHT of a perspective employer to NOT hire them. Same goes for those stretched EARLOBE hole for those Bones or car washers. You want to go tribal??? Go to New Guinea or become a friend of the Maori's. Not getting it folks.

And the Tramp Stamp?? Something for your Boyfriend to read as you both watch NASCAR??? At least he will have a cheek to set his beer on.  ;)

Don't get me wrong... I have tats and piercings in my life. BUT... aside for the ear..no one can see the rest unless undressed. There are ways of doing things and not "blowing yourself up" doing them.

So..put your savings in skin art and piercings in such a way that you will remain at the lower end of the earning ladder. Not many make it to the top with them..sans people like Rock Stars or those on INK. Not everyone who picks up a guitar will make it to the point of actually becoming Gene Simmons. It can SUCK TO BE YOU.

Oh yeah... and I don't wear prom dresses so can't comment on them. Ya'll have a Very Merry Christmas and a Great New Year!!!!!

I read the editorial of the Herald this morning... "Waterfire"... maybe $151,000 would have been better spent. It is touted as an artistic way to showcase the river... Hmmm anyone here eat any fish caught within the city limit of the Shenango? I have been in the river in the past when I was involved in the Small Ships Review... some of our craft passengers ended up with some strange skin disorders following being in that water. After seeing the Silver Street Bridge work a few years ago... as they blocked off part of the river, there was a plethora of junk in the bottom that needed to be removed.

I am not one to condemn a chance to paint a skunk but if I HAVE to buy the paint.... I have a problem. SV River Watchers seem to have embraced this but they are Non Profit and gain their funds by donation and membershp I believe.

Anyone have any idea what happened to the "Shenango River Walkway" over the river? What is being done to promote the Park on the river near the High Rise. No one seems to have really used it for much... It had a Gazebo and some landscaping and I recall that a local Veterans Group even erected a flagpole and flag at one time. Since...the pole has been allowed to rust through and disgarded and no one down there never thought enough of flying the flag on the pole so after the first few, none were raised or struck. Oh and speaking of flags near the river. When the Silver Street Bridge was re-built, it was designated as "Veterans Bridge". It was attended by representatives of all of the Valley Vetern Orgs and public. A pole was placed on the south-west end f the bridge and a flag was placed. For years, 2 people made sure the flag was raised at daybreak and lowered at dusk as no lights were on it for night time. I can really only recall one Veterans parade that used the bridge and the Wreath Ceremony ( On Nov. 11 at 11 AM every year) is still being done on the State Street Bridge, even though the Silver Street Bridge is Veterans Bridge. Well...that new building was constructed there at the parking lot and the pole came down, never to be placed again. How do I know about the 2 people?? I was one of them. So, How do you want to dress the river...and who pays?... good things to consider, I think.

My take is that NOW, the city of Sharon has enough problems to address without having to "attend a black tie affair" at the totally visual affair. Are looks really the long term solution? So... this is just my thoughts. Remember who's money is being spent and for what.

curiously, no real groups or individuals have been identified as behind this project, and i think the riverwatchers' only involvement is to say they support it.

the cost works out to a whopping $5,000 per aquatic tiki torch, x 30, and the original story hinted that this was only the first phase, so there's probably more money to be tapped in the future, not to mention the ongoing costs of buying "aromatic" firewood.

I think the pedestrian bridge money may have been diverted to some other equally-less-than-necessary project.

It is a newly formed group called "Waterfire Sharon". Maybe I can start something called "Lifeline for Lifetime"  ;) ... There are so many specialty groups out there doing the same things. WHat would be better... smaller groups with a similar mission or ONE BUG HUNKER doing this?

My point..overhead by the many groups who gather Toys for Children at Christmas, or packages of items for Service People overseas. How much time and $$ end up being tied up in overhead that could go toward the common end. I see a lot of this as a means to get personal recognition as an entity rather than the effort towards the project ends. I wonder what ONE Veterans Organization might accomplish at the local level and especially in Washington. I know the VFW,American Legion, VFW and many lesser go every spring to address Congress...one group at a time... I see it as just telling the same thing to a Legislator... numerous times from numerous orgs. Kinda weak I think.

DAV....         1.2 million members
Amer Leg..... 3 million
VFW .....       1.5 million

Add to that.. The VVA, Blind and Paralyzed Veterans as well as Korean Veteran Assoc, Marine Corp League, Army/Navy Garrisons and the number gets real high. We may have become "over specialized". Always strength in numbers.

Just my observations....Sometimes all of this hoopla seems like trying to herd Gerbils.
