Copper ~ Hot Commodity Lately!
« on: April 01, 2008, 10:36:33 AM »
I suppose salvage yards are not on high alert to people bringing in copper in large quantities?   Maybe they don't want to get involved?   Crazy stuff going on.

As much as 1,100 feet of copper wiring stolen from Crawford County building

CONNEAUTVILLE ? State police are looking for someone who stole as much at 1,100 feet of copper wire from a building here.

Police said someone broke into the former Ohio Rubber Co. building on Orco Drive sometime over the weekend and stole between 800 and 1,100 feet of coated copper wire from the building?s ceiling. The burglars then fled the building undetected.

Copper wire is generally stolen because of its high resale value to salvage yards.

If you have any information about the theft, call Pennsylvania State Police at (814) 336-6911.

If you have copper to sell in Florida you better be prepared to show id and answer a LOT of questions. They have had problems with prople breaking into new construction and ripping the romex right out of the house. They really love those big braided copper grounding wires the use here too. Very expensive!

See, that is what I was getting at.  I have to wonder now if the salvage yards will be on high alert, especially if it's new.

Pennies haven't been made out of solid copper for years. If they were, they'd be worth more than a penny.

Copper theft is like a cottage industry around my hometown these days. All over the police blotter.

That just sucks. I hope there's a recycler out there with a brain that turns them in when they try to sell them.

Gee whiz.  What kind of ass would do that?

My brother is doing a bunch of  remodeling and put copper gutters and downspouts on his place.  Might not be such a slick move, huh?  Hell, if someone will steal grave markers.........

A friend of mine has a recycling business here. He just obtains the metals and scraps them with the recyclers. He said that may of them are reputable and will ask lots of questions, especially if there is copper in involved or the lot looks suspicious. Then there are the others that just buy the copper regardless.

I guess the authorities have been cracking down on them with regularity here in Florida. Probably all over since copper is so expensive these days.

CLW? Copper downspouts? Holy crap! I think I'd a rather have a new truck!

We had a whole part of town evacuated because ammunition from the military base ended up at the salvage yard!  That was scary!  Once they got in there and started inspecting, they found more.  Of course they never really came out with how it got there.  I'm sure they know, but just don't want the public to know.
