Smock Bridge in Meadville

Does anyone know why there are orange construction markers all along the bridge and the Parkway?

Because it's Pennsylvania?

Maybe Penndot figured since they cut off Meadville from the I79 lifeline, they figured they might as well cut Meadville off from Walmart.

Think about it. Where would you shop if you didn't go across Smock bridge? I guess you can go through Kerrtown but the Mead Street bridge is out so that leaves only the Mercer and Spring Street bridges.

I may have told this story before about Smock bridge but here it goes again:

My buddies (yep, same ones that hung out at "The Garage") convinced me to go to Smock bridge, hop over the rail on the treatment plant side, land on a 3 sq/ft half moon shaped concrete support, shimmy under the bridge with our backs up against one concrete wall, feet on another wall approx. 2-3 feet in front of the other wall with NOTHING underneath except the railroad tracks & French Creek.
eventually we would find some scaffolding & a walkway that brought us to the other side of the creek where we could jump down on the Plaza side of French Creek.

W-T-F!?!?!?! were we thinking! I still get the willies when I think about that. To this day I can't get a straight answer out of the ringleader who concocted this adventure as to why we needed to do that.

OMG, what a daredevil you were......That bridge gives me the heebee geebees for some reason.   I don't trust it at all.

I hope they don't decide to close it off either.   I don't subscribe to the TRIB so I may have missed the announcement and was hoping someone else noticed.

I think it has something to do with the view as you head out of town. Fear of falling in poo?

What's that called? Fecalphobia? Poopooamiasis?

I have done my fair share of "code brown's".

Hey, we could make an urban dictionary entry for fear of sewage treatment plants. We may be famous for 3 seconds. ::)

Yea that bridge has been there for at least 52 yrs that I know of and has never had a complete top to bottom make over. With all that moisture underneath the bridge I'm wondering what shape that the steel beams are in... Kind of makes ya wonder doesnt it.... maybe thats why people, including me, speed across the bridge...

I don't ever remember the smell from the sewage plant, I always smelled the dog food though...
I used to practice softball underneath the bridge, I must have walked right past the plant & never knew it was there.

52 years? Scary. Again, our country needs to start a "works" program that would replace all the bridges and roads. Use the elders that know how to do the work & apprentice the youngun's to do the work. It would put everone to work, pump billions into the economy & make those bridges safe again. I read that PA has the most bridges in the country that are "critical", I guess that means they could fail at any time.
