Salvation Army Thrift Store
« on: June 09, 2008, 01:04:34 AM »
A few weeks ago while visiting CC, we stopped in the new Salvation Army Thrift Store.  I was just wondering how can they make any money, to pay for the construction and operation of this facility by selling used items for just a few dollars each?  Also the curbing around the outside looks to be made of Granite.  Just seemed to be a little over the top for a thrift store or maybe it's just me?

I believe there was a large sum of money left to the salvation army by a local woman who passed away a couple of years ago. I don't know if there were directions for a new facility in her will or not or not, nor do I know the details. I believe she also donated the land the building is located on as well. There is/was a discussion thread over on the trib about it, but it may have been purged by now.

Granite? Nice.

Decent store.  A lot like the one in Erie. Found some nice jeans in there the other day. The Redhead loves thrift shops.

Life is right abut a large sum of money being left for this facility. I think the "kettle" money all goes to the less fortunate and not something like building a new store. The store is very neat and orderly at this point (unlike a lot of thrift stores) and I hope it stays this way.   :)

Very interesting.  Definitely has to be the nicest thrift store in PA.  Did not realize the Trib had a thread on this.  I don't visit that site as often as I use to.  Too many wild animals running loose over there.

It wasn't terrible active, but there was a lot of talk about how the SA landed prime real estate and cash to boot. I can't remember the details of it all. I just tried searching the trib but it's so slow it will be fall before I find the results.

It's not bad but being a new store, it already smells.  or maybe it was just me.  I dunno.  Kiddo noticed it too on Thursday when we dropped off some of her "out of taste" clothes.

Nicest SA I've ever been in is in Altoona.  And it doesn't smell.

Haven't been there yet, but I did hear about the "smell". I've been told that nothing gets washed before it is hung out on display, so maybe that's where the smell is coming from. Gotta stop in and see for myself.

I'm the same way...so I'm sure I'd smell the "smell" if I went there. It surprises me that they don't wash clothing items before displaying them. Maybe all donated items have to be washed before dropping them off. Hey, I'm not afraid of dirt, but still????

I did not notice the smell when I was there.  But I do know on this side of the state the thrift stores would disinfect the funiture before they would put in on the floor for sale and that would have a slight odor.

Sorry to hear that. That must present some "personal challenges" at the very least.

Yep.  They say dogs have a sense of smell like 80 times that of humans.  So don't break wind around Foodie!  It would kill her!
