China is now #1
« on: June 14, 2008, 06:39:44 AM »
China has now clearly overtaken the United States as the world's leading emitter of climate-warming gases, a new study has found. The increasing emissions from China - up 8 percent in the past year - accounted for two-thirds of the growth in global greenhouse gas emissions in 2007, the study found.

....interesting picture; one of thousands of such pictures that could be taken all across the Middle Kingdom....

....though, interesting to note....

....people today either fail to remember or just plain don't know it pales to what Pittsburgh and other American used to look like before we focused on controlling pollution emissions.....

I think it's a viable source. The real estate for construction and waste disposal are probably the biggest hurdles to overcome. Nobody wants the power plant or the dump anywhere near them. Right now it appears to be our best option. Of course the oil will run out before we could get any of them on line though.

....and China  is just beginning to crank up its industrial base....

....of course, folks forget/ignore-

....that the main reason the U.S has not signed the Kyoto Treaty is the U.S., who has led the globe in cleaning the air, would be competing against  China, and India, which is not subject to Kyoto measures/limitations....

I was not alive to see PIttsburgh when those photos were taken. I know my parents used to talk about how when visiting there they would park your car outside. In as little as an hour an hour and it would be covered with soot and grime. China already has some very serious water issues which they are not addressing. I wonder how long it will take before they wake up to the problem? I hope not as long as it took the U.S.

In Hazelton railroad yard in Youngstown, the older guys used to tell about having to use their lanterns in the daylight because of the heavy smoke from the mills in the Mahoning Valley .
