Diamond Park Traffic Lights to be Removed?
« on: August 18, 2008, 09:38:54 AM »
I just overheard someone the other day about the traffic lights will be removed from around the Diamond Park?

I don't subscribe to the Trib so I guess I missed something?   What the heck is this all about?

Hi Foodie,,,, I only know what was reported in the Trib that the flow of traffic should improve with the new system. The direction of traffic will remain the same around the diamond but I think the lights will be replaced with yield signs......I think that is what it stated. Not sure. I think it will be better but I'm the last guy to accept change at this time in my life.  :)

Okay, I know at the other end near the library they have the YIELD signs but do you know how many people run that sign and don't realize the people going AROUND the Diamond have the right away?

Can you imagine the other end with all those traffic lights?   The one on Chestnut next to the Stone Church, the one coming around the Diamond facing the Stone Church, the one on S.Main facing the Diamond and the one on Chestnut near the YMCA.

Who in the heck will think they have the right away with that contraption going on?   I can only imagine accidents will happen??

Traffic won't flow the same. There will be no left turns from South Main onto Chestnut going toward the mall. If you wanna go that way - you'll have to drive around the Diamond.

I don't know. It's a pretty high traffic area and relying solely on signs seems a little dicey - but from what I understand, it's just going to be a traffic study for now. Could be something good - could be something bad, we'll find out.

Thanks Life - like SC said, I may just totally avoid that area all together.  However, I do use Chestnut St a lot.

Just an FYI, the lights are now gone and it is a real cluster F down there - LOL.   If you come down Chestnut past the YMCA toward downtown, you cannot go straight down the street now.   You MUST go completely around the Diamond Park to get to that stretch of Chestnut.

Also if you are sitting on S Main looking at the Diamond, you have 2 options, turn right and head up Chestnut toward the YMCA or go around the Diamond Park to get to the lower end of Chestnut St.

There are a LOT of orange cones and signs everywhere!!

Just a little update ~ so far I really like the idea of the 3-way stops.   Now it is a little awkward to drive down Chestnut to the intersection and have to drive around the Diamond Park to get to the other half of Chestnut but it seems to be working out pretty well (as least when I am driving that way).

I tried it today, Foodie.  I drove around it 3 times just for the heck of it.  All the while loudly singing out my rolled down windows, "pop goes the weasel."  Made sense at the time.

I like it. It's not difficult to get around and there are some nice opportunities for the city to landscape there oce they decide to make it permanent and ditch the orange cones. (No shrubs though. Can't have shrubs.)
