APPLEFEST!The Applefest will be held the first full weekend in October (that Fri, Sat and Sun) in downtown Franklin, PA.  This is very much like our Pumpkinfest, only bigger.  Food, vendors, crafts galore.  If you like Pumpkinfest, please go and enjoy a day here!

Stock up on non-perishables. Develop some sustainable means of income (if possible.) Curse the short-sightedness of our species. Learn to grow food. Get a wood burner . . . .

I totally agree with you Life, but I don't see any of that being practical in my life. There aren't huge tracts of tillable land at decent prices anymore and quite frankly, I'm not a farmer. I just can't see feeding my family on what I can grow on the land that I can afford. I also have no tools, domestic animals or barns to get started. I would have to be a hired hand over at the BH farm I guess.  ;D The soil down here is fairly poor (clay, sand) but the jobs are more plentiful than in Crawford County where the soil is rich. I couldn't make it there alone on the salary I could find, what makes me think I could make it alone out on a farm with nothing but a rake & a shovel?
Also, I can't see being sustainable unless there was an interim period where I could can, freeze dry, salt and whatever to store up for the winter when nothing grows.
That's why I have to lean on a God & prayer. I can't do it by myself. I've known a lot of people much more qualified than I that tried to divorce themselves from modern society and failed. And there are too many people now. Just imagine the scenario where everyone has to sustain for themselves. In this society there would be rampant looting & stealing from your crops so you would have to store up on ammo & protect your cabbages and such. I really have rolled this around in my head for a long time, even factoring in solar heating & energy and using cisterns to gather water. It's just too much work to "possibly" make it, and a real good chance I could kill myself in the process.
I can't live in that world so I pray that the one I live in changes for the better.

Tife -

I know. I don't stand a chance being able to do that because I was never taught how. I don't have the land either, let alone the time it'll take to be sucessful. It's just not the world I know. Though in present hindsight, I guess maybe the FFA woulda been a good club to join in high school!

The past 100 years have been tumultuous for us. I think in our zeal for our own 'advancement' we'd forgotten our place - who and what we are. Prayer is among the best things we have in our lives. I don't get the sense enough folks really do it - or do it all that well. I'm glad you do - and when it's time for things to happen, they'l happen according to the y way they're supposed to . . . .

I got some land.  We could have a small community helping each other out.  Help me work the land, you get a cut.  I have about 8 acres next to me unused at present.  We'll haul in some small modulars and make it work!  'Course you'll have to share your yard wth the bovine and chickens.  There's a deer processing place less than half a mile up the road.   The EE commune.........

Gee... a commune almost. More like a co-op. My father comes from a long line of farmers. I haven't sat on a tractor since 1976, but I'll be I could kill myself quicker now with a piece of equipment.  Yep, my side yar is looking pretty good for a garden these days. It gets sun from 9:00 am until sunset during the summer hours. My only concern is the competition for crops. Darn bug down here anyhow.

Cindy - if you're serious - I've got a strong back and a sound work ethic. Not kidding.

SC - I've never been a pre-trib believer. From the information I was taught, it's more a post thing. Either way - the story ends the same.

a friend of mine, pam, who died awful young, gave me a solid analogy about fear, faith,  relying on oneself and balance in responsibility in those matters.  funny, when she told me this it did not make as much sense to me until i was up against loosing the only thing that mattered to me in this world. pam gave me a great gift. i would like to pass it on, hopefully it wont take you all years and near death or tradgety for it to make sense to you.

here it is, i cant remember the exact phrasing but this is the jist of it.. picture a very sick dying 30 something girl and i sitting around talking...

...remember the movie wizard of oz lynn, where the wizard had just given out the sundry gifts, to the tinmnan, the heart, the scarecrow, the brain... remember when dorothy said to the wizard.."i bet there  is nothing in that black bag for me?".. well, lynn that is where i am , thats when dorothy knew she needed more than temporary fixes, she had to "take that baloon ride".  in other words "take the leap of faith" there was no  hope in oz. someday lynn, when you cant "fix it", you will know what i mean by  being "ready to take the baloon ride". this is the best way i can explain to you what faith feels like above and beyond the fact of what god tells us it is.

we dont have to be afraid, we dont have to "figure out what to do". do the best with what we have and like lifeed says, it will be what it is supposed to be. and like pam said, take the "ballon ride" or should i say the leap  of faith. my version says... its in gods hands guys,  he is in control really. i hope ive not offended anyone.  and by the way, id feed any one of you if i had the means and you all know it i bet.

Life, I have to agree that i do not feel a sense of urgency but if it comes to it I certainly am serious.  One thing I have more of than I need is land and it is something I could help others with.

We too are strapping down on some things.  We do a lot of unecessary spending and Mr Who is FINALLY starting to see that we need to scale back in some areas.   He is even learing to do things for himself (becoming a Mr Fix-it) instead of payig someone else to do everything.  YA!!!!!  My garden this year is only about 20 x 20 ft. and is limited to broccoli, califlower, zucchini, green beans and canelope.  Got two tomato trees too.   I a planning on putting in a peach and pear tree by the end of July for sure.  Am comtemplating trransplanting several berry bushes.....I am told they tolerate it well.  I would definately have a half dozen chickens if I thought my dogs would leave them alone.  Not.  Might stll give it a try.  I could build an overhang for a dry place.....they would be totally free range though.  I'm babbling........

Tife, Life.  You underestimate yourselves.  You can rent a rototiller for less than $40 a day.  Get it and split the cost with someone else.  Get your neighbors together and get some tilling done!  After that it's simple maintainence.  Start a box for your food scraps (with the worms and stuff, whats that called.....we do it all winter long) and fertilize it all year.  Your garden will be plusher every year doing this.  All you need after a good tilling is a small hand shovel.  Start your seed in late April/May sometime and get out ther on your hands and knees boys!  There are a million books on freezing/canning.  Some of it is soooooooo simple!  You don't need a huge garden to get a lot of great veggis.  Once you kow what you are doing you will be amazed at how much you will get out of a row of 6 to 10 plants!  (Green beans always amaze with their output.)  I say you start learning, reading, planning now for next year.

bh -

There was a time in my life when I thought maybe I'd like to marry Pam. We used to talk and talk and talk. I was very enamored with her - but didn't get the sense she was with me. (Long story.) After she died, at the get together at her house, her Mom said to me "She loved you you know." 'Bout tore me up, because I was never sure. She knew she had larger battles to deal with than having to deal with some messed up foggy headed dude like me. She was such a strange creature, but far far deeper than she let on sometimes. I still think about her every so often. There's a song by the Black Crowes called Thorn in My Pride that I always associate with memories of her. I shoulda taken my guitar that last visit I had with her . . .

Thanks for posting that. I can picture her saying that with that wry smile she had.

Wow - this is gonna be one distracted day after another for a while . . . .  :)
