Snowy Owl cam
« on: July 05, 2014, 07:17:41 PM »
Snowy Owls breed only in the Arctic. Adult males are almost pure white and females white with dark brown bars and spots (mottling). They build their nests on the ground, preferring high points such as mounds to watch for predators.

Only females incubate eggs, care for and feed the young. Her color pattern enhances her camouflage, making her difficult to see on the nest. Males provide food to the female during the nest period. Males also defend the chicks from predators and researchers. Females occasionally engage in attacks, but their nest defense duties are different, more passive with screaming and distraction displays.

Our nest is located in Barrow, Alaska and is part of the Owl Research Institute’s long-term study on Snowy Owl and Brown Lemming Breeding Ecology (now entering the 22nd year). With 24 hours of sunlight in the arctic this time of year, you can tune in any time day or night to watch the nest!

This study is one a few long-term research projects on this species, now in its 23rd year.

Get the camera live feed here. It's pretty cool, the chicks are moving around now.
