Really interesting article about how the big data centers thrived during the storms.

We did just fine, but we're also a big data center. One of the biggest in the SE US actually.

Hah, that still leaves about 500K homes without power.

Marie is a Cat 5 now (in case you're not following) and about to hammer Puerto Rico.  The one European model hypothesized today that Marie may pass dangerously close to the US East Coast next week, including NYC.  Has really been a month for natural disasters - wildfires, hurricanes and two serious earthquakes in Mexico. And that's just our hemisphere..

The DR got hammered by Irma and will get hit to a lesser degree by Maria. To a lesser degree is still not much fun. I can only imagine what it's like in a place like the DR where the infrastructure emergency response are not as good as what we have here.

Glad to hear you are OK NP, we survived by riding out the storm in a shelter (it was projected to be a cat 5 direct hit) and stayed with "friends with AC" for 8 days.

Thinking about moving back to PA if I can wing a work from home gig. I understand your list NP, I'm still wore out from the experience and the company expecting "business continuity"  :shakeass:

Hah, "business continuity".' The eternal catch phrase that all companies want but don't want to actually pay for. "Sure we have a disaster recovery plan, we just never really test it or keep it up to date." Yep, we have a  five 16 cylinder generators and 40 thousand gallons of fuel. and can kick out over 3 megawatts of power from them. We spent millions on making a resilient data center, but nobody really takes DR all that seriously. The only places I have seen that take is seriously are financial institutions and that's probably not all of them either. Most places that a are tech dependent will perish inside a month if they can't get back online quickly. You took it a lot harder down there than we did. We dodged a bullet up here!
