Now that is a shocker, larger more populus counties have more murders.  When you want the data to tell you an outcome it does.  A better trend is to look at data accounting for the population size, rate not absolute number.  Of course large cities will have more murders if you count the totals only, that seems obvious to most.

The initial two posted maps compare –

....2016 election results by county with-

....the number of MURDERS
per county.

The Washington Post maps show something completely different, comparing election results with over all crime rate.

The Washington Post article stipulates-
The overall crime rate includes reported incidents of violent and property crime, specifically murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson

To show crimes for counties with large and small populations, the rate is displayed as crime incidents per 1,000 people. Although the rate makes the view fairer, it is still subject to distortions, such as a one-time incident in a county with a small population.

Also, big cities have crimes involving people who travel in for work or entertainment, so a rate based on residential population is skewed
.

Additionally, stipulated by the Washington Post article-
The violent crime map shows clusters of counties with high rates in South Carolina, Florida, the Memphis area and New Mexico. Several of the clusters are in rural areas where a small number of crimes may generate a relatively high crime rate because there are few people living there.

Per the cited Washington Post article, Chicago has a median violent crime rate compared to the rest of the country.

Statistically, a “median” rate means Chicago sits in the middle of the pack in terms of violent crime yard stick.

Of course, such a selective methodology completely skews and fails to reflect the documented reality of Chicago being a heavily regulated gun-free zone-
